Abram Collins 2-1-1 Lincoln
Daniel Collins 2-3-5 Lincoln

3-0-2 Lincoln
Joseph Collins 2-3-0 Lincoln
The first number refers to
free white males under 16, the second to free white males over 16, and the third
number refers to free white females in the household. William would be one of
the three males over 16 in Jacob’s house.
1800 Lincoln County, North Carolina census
There are 7
Collins families:
Abraham Collins
Daniel Collins
Henry
Collins
Isaac Collins
Mary Collins
Samuel Collins
William
Collins, 16-25, is living with a female 16-25 and two males under 10.
William lives next door to James Hardin
1810 Lincoln County census
William Collins, 26-44, is listed
with two females 26-44, four males under 10 and one female under 10.
Mary Collins, over 45, is head of household in the home preceding William’s in
the list. In her household is one male 16-25 and one female 10-15. She is
undoubtedly related to William and is a widow. She could be his mother.
Martin Collins, 26-44, is living in the house immediately after William’s, and
could be William’s oldest son. In his household are three males under 10 and one
female under 10. While the census record does not match the blank census form,
Martin has three slaves. While the 1810 blank census form does not include a
category for value of real estate, the Lincoln County census has two columns on
the far right with numbers that might be the value of real estate and personal
wealth. If this is the case, Martin owns real estate valued at $400.
Jacob Collins, 16-18, is living next door to Martin with a female 16-18 and two
females under 10. Jacob is William’s son.
Joseph Collins, over 45, is
living four houses from Mary Collins. In his household is a female over 45, one
male under 10, and one female 16-25. Joseph has two slaves and $300 in real
estate if this census follows the form of later censuses. I don’t know his
relationship to Jacob Sr.
Samuel Collins, over 45, is living next
door to Joseph. In his household are a male 10-15, a male 15-25, and females
under 10, 10-15, and 15-25. Samuel has one slave and real estate valued at $100.
I don’t know his relationship to Jacob Sr.
1820 Lincoln County census
William Collins, 26-45, is living
“East of the South Fork of the Catawba River.” In his household are one male
under 10, one female under 10, and one female 16-25.
Jean Collins, a
female over 45, is living next door to William with one female 16-25. She could
be Martin Collins’ widow.
Also in the county are 1820 United States
Federal Census are Ab (Abraham?) Collins, Alex Collins, Isaac Collins, Jacob
Collins, two Jno Collins, Mary Collins, two Samuel Collins, and another William
Collins.
1830 Lincoln County
census
William Collins, 50-59, is living with one female
50-59, two males under 5, one 10-14, one 15-29, and two 20-29, and one female
under 5, one 10-14, and one 20-29. He lives next door to his son Jacob Collins.
For what it is worth, William’s other neighbor is Gabriel Martin, 20-29, with a
female 20-29, and one boy under 5.
Jacob Collins, 40-49, is living
with one female 40-49, two boys 10-14, one 15-19, and one female 20-29.
Thomas Collins, 20-29, is living with one female 20-29, one boy under 5 (Perry),
and one boy 5-9 (unknown). Thomas lives four houses from his brother Jacob.
1840 Lincoln County census
Thomas Collins, 30-39, is living
with a female 30-40, one boy under 5 (Wiley), one 10-14 (Perry), one girl under
5 (unknown), and two girls 5-9 (Drucilla and Rhoda). Thomas lives one house away
from Wiley. His oldest son, name unknown, 15-19, is missing, and the three
youngest children, all daughters, were born 1844 and later. The missing son is
possibly Davis Collins, below, who would have been born 1821-1830.
Wiley Collins, 20-29, with a female 20-29, one male 5-9, and two females under
5. Wiley and Ransom are neighbors. Wiley, born 1812, is the son of William
Collins.
Ransom Collins, 30-39, with a female 20-29, with one male
5-9, one 10-14, two females under 5, and one 5-9. Ransom, born 1806, is the son
of William Collins although he would be 40-49.
Davis Collins, 20-29,
with a female 20-30, and one male under 5. He is probably not William’s son (See
Davis Collins below), but is perhaps a grandson. He could also be Thomas’s son.
Davis lives 14 houses away from Ransom, but the following Collins families are
all next door neighbors.
James Collins, 40-49, with a female 20-29,
two males under 5, three 10-14, and one female under 5. He could be William
James Collins, William’s son, born 1798.
William Collins, 70-79, with
one female 60-69 (Susannah).
Robert Collins, 20-29, with a female
20-29, and three females under 5. Jacob Archibald Collins, William’s son, had a
son named Robert, born 03 May 1812.
Davis Collins, 30-39, born
1811-1820, with an adult female 20-29, two males under 5, one 10-14, and one
female under 5. Davis is probably William’s son, born 1809.
Samuel
Collins, 30-39, with an adult female 30-39, one male 5-9, and three females
under 5, one 5-9, and one 10-14. I do not know Samuel’s relationship, but he is
undoubtedly related and apparently migrated with the rest of the family. He
could be a first cousin. Samuel is living in Gilmer County in 1850 and Pickens
County in 1860. He is 55, a blacksmith. His wife is Jane, 50, and in the
household are Amantha A. 26, Elizabeth A. 25, Eliza A. 17, all born in North
Carolina, and Margaret 14, Joseph N. 11, and Lucy B. 5, born in Georgia, so the
family migrated to Georgia between 1843 and 1846, as did William’s family. Jane
H. Collins, 18 March 1812-18 January 1887, and Samuel D. Collins, 5 April
1805-14 September 1886, are buried in the Hinton Methodist Church Cemetery.
A Samuel Collins is listed on the pension rolls for the War of 1812 in Lincoln
County in 1834. He was a member of the Seventh Regiment, Lincoln County
Second Regiment, and/or Maryland Militia. He served as a private and earned an
annual allowance of $26.48, with the total amount received $79.48. The pension
was started 20 May 1834.
1850
Census for Subdivision 33, Gilmer County, Georgia
Gilmer
County, Georgia in 1850 included substantial territory that it does not include
today. Gilmer was one of the 10 original counties created out of the Cherokee
Nation and extended from the headwaters of Talking Rock Creek, on a line on the
same parallel or just north of Harnageville (now Tate, Pickens County) to the
Tennessee Line. Cherokee County, also one of the original counties, adjoined it
to the south. In 1853, Pickens County was created from the southern portion of
Gilmer, including Talking Rock, Georgia, and from the northern portion of
Cherokee, beginning just above the headwaters of Salacoa Creek in the northwest
corner, so the census records for Gilmer County in 1850 reflect the old
boundaries. Pickens is a narrow county north to south, about 13.5 miles, and the
bulk of it appears to have been taken from Gilmer.
Jacob Collins,
Sr.’s descendants settled primarily in that portion of Gilmer County that became
Pickens County, in the Salacoa District of Cherokee County and the Pine Log,
Cassville, and Cartersville Districts of Bartow County from 1850 to 1900. Bartow
was originally named Cass County, and was one of the original 10 counties. A
portion of it became Gordon County, including the Fairmount District. Note that
the county lines of Pickens, Cherokee, Bartow, and Gordon Counties join about
three miles southeast of Fairmount, Georgia.
